Interesting Facts/Historic Buildings and Places Carrboro was named for mill owner Julian Shakespeare Carr. The community was at one time named Venable, and it was originally known as West End.

The area was settled around a railroad stop located approximately one mile west of the University of North Carolina.

The population began to grow when the Alberta Cotton Mill was built next to the railroad in 1890. Julian Carr bought the mill and other buildings in 1909, and opened the Durham Hosiery Mill. The original mill was to be demolished in 1975, but a community petition and fundraiser restored it as the Carr Mill Mall.
